The Baganda believe in three fundamental manifestations of life:

1. Katonda: The natural instinct to create.

2. Liso Dene: The natural instinct to observe and analyze.

3. Kintu: The natural awareness of the self as separate from the other.

According to the Baganda, the first man—Kintu—represents the moment in evolutionary history when humanity first became aware of its separation from the rest of nature.

Liso Dene represents the realization by Kintu that man is incapable of separating himself from nature; that man and nature are one eternally creative force: Katonda.

Ultimately, Kintu, Liso Dene, and Katonda are three manifestations of the singular essence of Buganda.
