11h agoWhat most academics are robbed of is the ability to discover most philosophical ideas on their own. A lot of these deep thoughts are quite intuitive to those who pay attention. However, if, before you are able to discover them on your own, schools attach them to unnecessary memes like Descartes, Whitehead, Jesus, Buddha, and whatnot, it can be problematic.
When the time comes that these thoughts finally reveal themselves to you, you may find yourself in delusional mental states like, "I finally understand Whitehead." Even worse, you may succumb to a psychosis like, "Jesus is talking to me."
Perhaps the worst outcome would be that, due to one insight that reminds you of the Buddha, you end up indoctrinating yourself with other writings attributed to the Buddha and confuse that with acquiring wisdom.
This, I think, is the biggest flaw with scripture. While the intention may be good-willed, there is no shortcut to acquiring wisdom besides paying attention to your life. Reading and reciting beautiful-sounding phrases is not possessing wisdom; it's simply indulging in art.
