Maybe J. Cole is suffering the same problem as Eminem and Lil Wayne. The skill is undeniable. All three of these motherfuckers are living boring lives and are not willing to build their brands around important issues. This is the problem with hip-hop: you can't fake it after your audience leaves high school. If you're just an ordinary, boring workaholic, then while you can score some "that guy is relatable" points among some, the gamified attention economy is going to prefer the creators who flirt a little bit with multiple extremes. Being extremely good in only one dimension caps you to the socially acceptable limit of that dimension. And if, relative to your other dimensions, the extreme is too steep, then it is going to be overrepresented, and you're going to come off as one-dimensional. Anyway, what do I know? If I could rap, I would be rapping in Cole's stead because I am a much better writer than him.
